CLIENT GOALS
For several years, The Hawken School has a Master Plan goal of enhancing student development through expanding classroom organization and scale, ratio of students to teacher and available classrooms to manage growth of the overall campus and solidifying the School mantra of Fair Play.
SOLUTIONS
WMF responded to these challenges by designing third grade classroom expansion from two classrooms to four classrooms by expanding the footprint towards north parking lot. The existing Taplin Lobby correspondingly increases it's area. The new façade closely reflects the adjacent west wing faced through brick coursing and corbeling, window detailing and decorative detailing. Fifth grade has grown it's classroom quantity and taken over available space in the former Gray Gym. The gymnasium is being converted to host a an Activity Zone where by allowing groups of students to have flexible learning options and cohort activities. The over-scaled volume is diminished using a series of suspended acoustical fins, light fixtures and improved clerestory glazing. Adjacent to this zone, enlarged classrooms better organize function and proximity - classrooms were previously distributed.
RESULTS
This master plan design results in a delightful solution, is efficient in energy use and of simple aesthetics gestures. In collaboration with the School's selected CMr, WMF's construction management team provided construction cost estimating; bidding results in costs within 1% of WMF estimate.
