Sustainable Design

WMF is committed to the “Green Design” movement. It has always been a design consideration of the firm to provide solutions that are minimally invasive and in concert with the environment. Today, as members of the US Green Building Council, the firm continues this commitment. As the concept of sustainable design matures it is becoming easier and more cost-effective to implement. WMF’s sustainable designs reduce environmental impact, lower energy costs, improve health and air quality, and ultimately enhance productivity.

New demands from our communities have emerged as we approach the 21st century. The necessity for the sustainable management of resources and energies, and for direct and indirect environmental protection on several levels, influences our priorities in what constitutes a successful design. The optimization of economic and environmental performance is our goal. WMF focuses on design alternatives that promote energy conservation, resource efficiency, pollution prevention, and making the most of all passive means that a building can provide. Commitment to limit resource consumption can prevent compromising the needs of future generations.

In the way we design, our objectives are to select and use environmentally safe products and materials made from renewable/sustainable sources, ensure environmentally safe methods of material installation, encourage and require recycling of existing materials in renovation projects, and wherever possible, use local materials. Our goals embrace the technology of ecologically sensitive building design, as it is an important economic and environmental benefit. Awareness, education and action are part of the continuing sustainable design leadership efforts. Urbanism, human health, energy, water, and materials are ingredients to our application of sustainable planning and architectural design.
