This integrated Cancer Center is one of only a handful in the country to offer integrated cancer treatment in a single integrated facility. The capabilities of the facility include: radiation oncology, medical oncology and nutritional counseling.

One of the program prerogatives was to raise the image and level of cancer care in the community. A strong design consideration was how a patient’s attitudes toward treatment could be pivotal in treatment success. Another design factor was lessening the “burn out” rate of cancer center staff due to the nature of their activities.

In response to these considerations, the design provided a strong residential, non-institutional image. A central atrium space provided a sense of orientation from all areas of the building, yet organized the labyrinthine circulation, caused by a complicated floor plan. With the addition of skylights and plants, sunlight was introduced at such focal points as the lobbies, nursing stations and the atrium. Patio seating areas, adjacent to waiting rooms, were planted with seasonal plantings. The radiation vaults and large scale elements were reduced in scale by berming them with tapered planting areas, which also provide additional radiation shielding. Interior colors and furnishings were selected to emphasize themes of tranquility and warmth.

A major addition was completed by WMF in 2001.
